We are currently up to our elbows in gift shopping for family, friends, and occasionally ourselves. We are encouraged and enabled in this pursuit by messages from every side we look. We are encouraged to shop locally, support small businesses, and indulge in the cyber sale week of the year. The talking heads worry us about the state of the economy, the direction the government is heading, and with whom other nations are developing friendships. Added to this mix is how badly we have annoyed Mother Nature so that our climate is no longer behaving in a predictable manner ( if it ever was). At the White Rabbit Fine Art Gallery we are busy adding our voice to all the others calling out to you.We believe we fit into several boxes. We are local and we are certainly small business. We are ardent supporters of any number of different national leaders and frequenii wonder how others voted whichever way they did. Discussing climate now seems be a mote point. Whatever is happening outside now will change soon, or not. So with all of this happening in our world why are folks buying art. There is only some you can wear and almost none can or should be eaten but still gift givers come into the gallery looking for the perfectgift for someone deserving of that perfect gift. I have observed this behavior for decades. History tells us that this behavior has been practiced for many generations. A good question of this practice might be “why do we (humans) decorate?” Take a ride in a beach neighborhood, one with no HOA. Look at the decorations people display on houses they live in when they plan to be happiest. Look at how creative we get when it is required that we wear a uniform.
Decorations share the same elements and principles that we are taught in art classes. We use them to show the world who we are, how we feel about life. How we decorate for ourselves. How we choose that perfect gift for someone special ( maybe ourselves). When we buy art, created by local artists in a small business we are doing so much more than being a good citizen we are continuing one of our behaviors that makes us human and put us on the top of the animal kingdom. Our decorations, our art is our practice of glorifying the human spirit. We create to celebrate the fact that we can celebrate and we can share the celebration with you.
